COLLABORATION WITH TEMPO

 

The residency is organized in collaboration with Tempo: The Quarterly Review of New Music, an international journal dedicated to contemporary and experimental music and published by Wolke Verlag.

This collaboration connects the residency’s processes of artistic inquiry with a broader field of international discourse on contemporary musical practice, research, performance, listening, technology, and experimentation.

 

Selected contributions emerging from the residency may be invited for further development and considered for publication in Tempo. This opportunity supports participants in translating the specificity of an artistic research process into a form appropriate for critical and public circulation.

 

Publication is understood as one possible outcome of the residency rather than as its universal measure of value. Not every significant artistic research project requires a journal publication, and not every form of knowledge generated through practice can or should be transferred without remainder into discursive writing.

 

Where publication is relevant, participants may work toward a contribution capable of articulating:

– The central research question, proposition, or problem

– The artistic, intellectual, and historical context of the inquiry

– The relation between practice and research method

– The materials, procedures, and situations through which the inquiry was conducted

– The forms of knowledge or critical insight generated through the process

– The role of scores, recordings, images, diagrams, documentation, or other supporting materials

– The wider significance of the project for contemporary musical thought and practice

 

Participation in the residency does not guarantee publication. Selection for the residency, presentation at the festival, invitation to develop a contribution, and final publication are distinct processes. Any contribution considered for publication remains subject to the journal’s editorial judgment, scope, development requirements, and applicable editorial procedures.

 

This distinction preserves the residency as a genuinely exploratory environment. Participants are encouraged to take artistic and intellectual risks, revise their premises, acknowledge unresolved questions, and allow the research process to transform the project rather than directing every decision toward a predetermined publication outcome.
