CONTEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
The residency is organized through three interdependent conceptual fields:
ENUNTIATIO, PRAEFATIO, AND FORMULAE
Articulation, Situated Framing, and Methodological Form
The title enuntiatio.praefatio.formulae provides a conceptual vocabulary for examining how artistic research is articulated, contextualized, methodologically organized, and made public.
The three terms do not designate consecutive stages or rigid categories. Every artistic research project involves acts of articulation, structures of framing, and methodological forms. Each term illuminates a distinct but interconnected dimension of inquiry:
– Enuntiatio concerns articulation: how a question, proposition, process, experience, or finding becomes perceptible and communicable.
– Praefatio concerns situated framing: the historical, conceptual, institutional, ethical, material, and personal conditions that precede and shape what can be asked.
– Formulae concerns methodological form: the procedures, protocols, scores, systems, tools, and representational structures through which the inquiry is conducted.
Together, they support a critical examination of what a project claims, where it speaks from, how it operates, and what forms of knowledge it makes possible.

ENUNTIATIO
Enuntiatio designates the act of articulation through which an inquiry becomes available for encounter, interpretation, and critical discussion.
In artistic research, articulation may occur through language, but it is not restricted to language. A research proposition may be articulated through sound, performance, gesture, notation, spatial organization, an interface, a compositional system, a recording, an installation, a curatorial sequence, or a deliberately structured situation.
The central question is not simply what a project says, but how it says, sounds, performs, stages, materializes, or makes perceptible what it has come to know.
Different media do not communicate an identical content through interchangeable forms. The medium participates in producing the research proposition.
A written essay can establish concepts, contexts, arguments, and relations among sources with a particular degree of explicitness. A performance can disclose embodied, temporal, affective, and relational knowledge that may not be separable from the event of its realization. A score can document a compositional decision, prescribe action, distribute agency, and generate conditions for future variation. A recording can preserve certain sonic relations while transforming spatial, visual, social, and performative dimensions. An installation can organize knowledge through movement, duration, attention, material encounter, and spatial participation.
Enuntiatio therefore asks participants to examine the relation between research content and modes of expression.
Articulation does not require the elimination of ambiguity. Artistic research may generate knowledge whose precision depends on multiplicity, indeterminacy, contradiction, or the coexistence of incompatible perspectives.
The task is not necessarily to resolve these conditions, but to make clear how they function within the inquiry. Ambiguity can be methodologically productive when it is structured and critically understood. It becomes less persuasive when it substitutes for the articulation of a research problem.
Enunciation also concerns the position from which a project speaks.
Every research articulation is situated. It is shaped by the researcher’s training, language, cultural location, aesthetic commitments, institutional position, access to resources, relation to collaborators, and proximity to the materials or communities involved.
The authority of a research statement does not arise from presenting these conditions as absent. It may instead emerge from identifying how they influence the project and from distinguishing among direct experience, artistic interpretation, historical evidence, theoretical proposition, and speculation.
Participants may consider:
– What is the project attempting to articulate?
– Which aspects of the inquiry can be expressed propositionally?
– Which aspects require artistic, embodied, sonic, or performative experience?
– How does the chosen medium shape the research claim?
– What does the artistic form make available that discursive writing cannot replace?
– What does writing make explicit that artistic presentation may leave implicit?
– Who speaks, performs, demonstrates, listens, or is represented?
– To whom is the project addressed?
– Which terms require clarification or definition?
– What remains deliberately unresolved?
– How can uncertainty be acknowledged without abandoning precision?
– Which forms of exposition allow artistic and discursive knowledge to remain distinct yet mutually illuminating?
Within the residency, enuntiatio supports the development of research questions, project descriptions, artist-researcher statements, lectures, papers, performance expositions, and other public forms through which artistic inquiry enters collective discourse.

PRAEFATIO
Praefatio directs attention toward what precedes, frames, conditions, and authorizes an inquiry.
No artistic research project begins from an empty field. Every project enters existing histories, techniques, repertoires, concepts, debates, institutions, technologies, pedagogies, and relations of power.
The preface is therefore not merely an introductory statement added after the work has been completed. It names the project’s conditions of possibility.
A compositional inquiry may be shaped by inherited notational systems, instrumental conventions, aesthetic genealogies, software architectures, educational models, or assumptions about authorship. A performance-based project may depend on traditions of interpretation, training, embodiment, rehearsal culture, and institutional expectation. A technological project may be conditioned by proprietary systems, technical standards, data structures, maintenance practices, and unequal access to resources. A socially or environmentally engaged inquiry may involve communities, places, narratives, and forms of knowledge that require careful attention to consent, attribution, reciprocity, and representation.
Praefatio asks participants to identify the contexts within which their questions become meaningful.
Contextualization is not the accumulation of references for its own sake. Its function is to clarify what a project enters, contests, extends, reconfigures, or leaves unresolved.
A project gains precision when it can distinguish its contribution from assumptions already established within its field. This does not require an exaggerated claim to absolute novelty. A meaningful contribution may consist of reinterpreting an established practice, bringing previously separated discourses into relation, exposing a neglected condition, developing a method within a new context, or making tacit knowledge available for critical consideration.
Praefatio also concerns positionality.
Researchers do not stand outside the situations they investigate. Their decisions influence the field, materials, collaborators, and representations through which knowledge is produced. In artistic research, this involvement may be particularly pronounced because the researcher can simultaneously be the maker, performer, observer, documentarian, and author of the exposition.
Such proximity is not inherently a methodological weakness. It can provide forms of access, sensitivity, and embodied knowledge unavailable to an external observer. It also creates specific responsibilities.
Participants are encouraged to examine how their positions affect what they perceive, which interpretations they privilege, what remains undocumented, and how authority is distributed within collaborative work.
Historical framing is equally consequential. Genealogies are never neutral lists of predecessors. They organize lineage, legitimacy, influence, continuity, and exclusion. To situate a project historically is also to determine which practices, individuals, institutions, and forms of knowledge become visible.
Participants may consider:
– Which artistic, scholarly, technological, or social histories precede the project?
– What existing research, repertoire, practice, or debate does the inquiry enter?
– Which concepts and conventions does the project inherit?
– Which genealogies have been privileged, and which have been neglected?
– How does the researcher’s position shape access, interpretation, and representation?
– Which institutional conditions enable or constrain the inquiry?
– Which collaborators, communities, archives, environments, or bodies contribute knowledge?
– How are consent, attribution, ownership, and responsibility addressed?
– Which assumptions are carried by the selected methods and technologies?
– What does the project take for granted?
– Which historical or theoretical claims require substantiation?
– How can contextual framing remain rigorous without becoming detached from artistic practice?
Within the residency, praefatio supports contextual research, genealogical mapping, positional reflection, ethical consideration, and the articulation of how a project relates to wider artistic and intellectual fields.

FORMULAE
Formulae concerns the operational forms through which artistic research is organized and conducted.
A formula may take the form of a score, protocol, rehearsal structure, compositional procedure, algorithm, listening exercise, interview framework, notation system, technical setup, spatial arrangement, archival method, sequence of tasks, diagram, model, instrument, interface, writing structure, or process for documenting and comparing iterations.
The term does not imply a fixed recipe capable of producing identical results. Within artistic research, a formula may function as a provisional and revisable apparatus: a structure designed to generate material, expose relationships, test a proposition, or create conditions in which the unexpected can occur.
Methods are not neutral containers. They determine, in part, what can be perceived, produced, documented, and interpreted.
A microphone position determines which spatial relations become audible in a recording. A rehearsal protocol distributes time, attention, and authority. A score establishes which actions are fixed, delegated, negotiated, or left open. An algorithm formalizes particular distinctions while excluding others. A notation system makes some dimensions precise while leaving others dependent on embodied interpretation. An interview structure influences what participants can say and how responses become organized. A public presentation reorganizes the temporal and rhetorical form of the research.
Formulae therefore asks not only whether a method works, but what kind of knowledge it enables and what it prevents from appearing.
Methodological rigor does not require the elimination of intuition, improvisation, contingency, chance, or surprise. These may function as legitimate research operations when their roles are articulated and their consequences critically examined.
Likewise, repetition within artistic research does not necessarily seek mechanical reproducibility. Some artistic situations cannot be reproduced without altering the conditions that give them meaning. The relevant standard may instead be methodological traceability: whether others can understand how the inquiry proceeded, why decisions were made, how materials changed, and on what basis interpretations were formed.
A research method may also evolve during the project. When materials resist an initial procedure or an unforeseen result exposes the limitations of a method, revision may indicate rigor rather than failure.
Participants may consider:
– Which procedures organize the inquiry?
– Why are these methods appropriate to the research question?
– What do they enable the researcher to perceive, test, or produce?
– What do they exclude?
– How are intuition and systematic investigation related?
– Which variables are controlled, and which remain open?
– How are iterations compared?
– What roles do failure, resistance, surprise, and unintended consequence play?
– How are methods documented?
– Can another researcher or practitioner follow the project’s logic without mechanically reproducing its results?
– How does the research apparatus distribute agency among people, materials, technologies, and environments?
– At what point should a method be retained, modified, or abandoned?
– Can the method itself become an artistic outcome?
Within the residency, formulae supports methodological design, practical experimentation, iterative development, documentation strategies, technical and performative testing, and critical reflection on the relation between research procedure and artistic result.

Taken together, enuntiatio, praefatio, and formulae establish four fundamental questions:
– What is being articulated?
– From which conditions and positions does the articulation emerge?
– Through which procedures and forms is the inquiry conducted?
– How can its processes and insights become available for critical and public encounter?
