DOCUMENTATION AS RESEARCH

Documentation occupies a central and contested position within artistic research.

A document can preserve evidence of an event, provide material for later analysis, enable comparison among iterations, communicate a process to others, or become an artistic work in its own right.

At the same time, documentation is never identical with the event or practice it records.

A video of a performance reorganizes attention through framing, camera position, editing, and sound capture. A written rehearsal account translates embodied and collective activity into retrospective language. A score may document compositional structure while leaving interpretation dependent on tacit knowledge. A diagram can clarify a system while simplifying temporal or affective complexity. A recording can make sonic detail repeatable while removing the social and spatial conditions of listening.

The residency invites participants to develop documentation strategies appropriate to their research rather than accumulating materials without a clearly defined methodological function.

Participants may ask:

– What purpose does the documentation serve?

– For whom is it produced?

– Which dimensions of the process need to remain traceable?

– What is transformed or excluded by the selected medium?

– Is the document evidence, analysis, exposition, artwork, archive, or several of these at once?

– How will documentation be selected, organized, annotated, and contextualized?

– What permissions or forms of attribution are required?

– How might the act of documenting alter the behavior of participants or the form of the work?

Documentation can also generate new research questions. Reviewing a recording may expose a discrepancy between intention and realization. Comparing drafts may reveal a pattern of decision-making. An archive of unsuccessful attempts may disclose the methodological structure of a project more clearly than its final outcome.

Within enuntiatio.praefatio.formulae, documentation is therefore treated not merely as evidence that research occurred, but as an active site of inquiry.
