PUBLICATION DEVELOPMENT

 

For participants whose projects are appropriate for discursive publication, the residency provides a context for developing the transition from artistic research process to written contribution.

 

This transition requires more than converting a presentation transcript into an article. A publication-oriented contribution must establish a coherent structure, define its field of relevance, situate its inquiry, articulate the role of practice, and determine how artistic materials will be represented.

 

Participants may consider:

 

– What is the central contribution of the text?

– Which dimension of the larger artistic project can be addressed within one publication?

– What does the intended readership need to understand?

– How should the research be situated in relation to existing discourse?

– Which examples are essential?

– How can scores, images, recordings, diagrams, or other media function within the argument?

– What balance is required among description, analysis, context, and reflection?

– How can the text remain accessible without simplifying the inquiry?

– What must change when a live presentation becomes a written contribution?

– Which aspects of the project should remain in artistic rather than discursive form?

 

Selected contributions may be considered for publication in Tempo. Consideration may require further development beyond the formal residency period.

 

The publication pathway is selective. The artistic significance of a project does not automatically determine its suitability for journal publication, and suitability for publication does not define the overall value of the research.

 

A project may produce a significant performance, method, instrument, archive, or collaborative process without requiring a conventional article. Conversely, a written contribution may focus on one specific methodological or conceptual dimension of a much larger artistic project.

 

The residency supports participants in identifying the form through which their research can circulate most effectively and responsibly.
