Rigor in artistic research may involve:

 

– A clearly articulated and consequential research question

– Coherence among question, method, material, context, and outcome

– Sustained engagement with relevant practices and discourses

– Precise description of artistic and methodological procedures

– Critical reflection on assumptions and limitations

– Attention to contradictory, resistant, or unexpected findings

– Appropriate documentation of process and transformation

– Clear distinction among observation, interpretation, speculation, and claim

– Reflexivity concerning the researcher’s position

– Ethical awareness regarding collaborators, communities, environments, archives, and data

– A form of exposition appropriate to the knowledge produced

 

Rigor does not require every project to resolve its question conclusively.

 

An inquiry may produce a more precise problem, reveal the inadequacy of an inherited method, expose conflicting forms of knowledge, or demonstrate why a question cannot be answered within its original terms. Such outcomes can be substantial when they are carefully articulated and supported by the research process.

 

Responsibility concerns how knowledge is produced, attributed, represented, and circulated.

 

Projects involving collaborators, participants, communities, archives, culturally specific materials, personal narratives, recordings, data, or public spaces should consider consent, attribution, access, representation, ownership, and possible consequences.

 

Participants are encouraged to ask:

 

– Who contributes knowledge to the project?

– How is that contribution acknowledged?

– Who has the authority to interpret or represent the materials involved?

– Which individuals or communities may be affected by the research?

– What should remain private, restricted, or unsuitable for public dissemination?

– How do documentation and publication alter the status of artistic materials?

– What responsibilities continue after public presentation or publication?
