WHO THE RESIDENCY IS FOR

 

The open call is addressed to individual artistic researchers and research groups working across music, sound, performance, and related interdisciplinary fields.

 

The term artistic researcher is understood broadly. Participants may work primarily as composers, performers, improvisers, sound artists, instrument builders, technologists, directors, curators, writers, educators, independent researchers, or practitioners whose work moves among several of these positions.

 

What defines the program is not a single professional identity, academic discipline, or artistic genre, but the presence of a sustained inquiry conducted through or in close relation to artistic practice.

 

The residency is particularly relevant to projects involving:

 

– Practice-based or practice-led research

– Composition as research

– Performance as research

– Improvisation as a mode of inquiry

– Research-creation and related hybrid methodologies

– Sonic, acoustic, or listening-based investigation

– Experimental notation and score-based inquiry

– Instrumental, vocal, or embodied research

– Technological and computational artistic practice

– Instrument, interface, or system design

– Electroacoustic, multimedia, or interdisciplinary work

– Site-responsive, spatial, or environmental research

– Archival, genealogical, or reconstructive inquiry

– Curatorial or dramaturgical research

– Research into rehearsal, collaboration, and collective authorship

– Critical writing emerging from artistic practice

– Experimental forms of exposition and public presentation

 

Projects may enter the residency at different stages.

 

An applicant may bring:

 

– An initial question requiring methodological clarification

– An active project in need of critical testing

– A body of artistic work whose research implications remain insufficiently articulated

– A mature inquiry requiring stronger contextualization or public exposition

– A developing presentation, lecture, or text

– A project being prepared for possible publication consideration

– A collaborative inquiry requiring clearer articulation of roles, methods, and authorship

 

The residency welcomes projects whose outcomes are not yet fully determined. One of its central purposes is to allow research questions, methods, and public forms to evolve through sustained exchange.

 

Participants should nevertheless be able to identify the project’s field of inquiry, its current stage of development, the materials or practices through which it proceeds, and the reasons why participation would be consequential.

 

The format presupposes sustained engagement across the online and on-site stages. Participants should be prepared to:

 

– Present and contextualize their artistic research

– Share relevant works, materials, documentation, drafts, and portfolios

– Articulate current questions, propositions, and uncertainties

– Discuss artistic, theoretical, methodological, ethical, and contextual dimensions

– Engage constructively with projects grounded in different disciplines and traditions

– Offer and receive precise critical feedback

– Test and revise research methods

– Reflect on documentation and public presentation

– Develop an appropriate relation among artistic practice, critical exposition, and audience

– Contribute to an international working environment based on attentiveness, reciprocity, intellectual generosity, and professional responsibility

 

The residency is not conceived as a conventional academic conference in which finalized papers are presented once and remain unchanged. Nor is it solely a production residency oriented toward completing an artistic work without examining its research premises.

 

It is intended for participants who wish to develop the relation among inquiry, practice, method, context, reflection, documentation, and public communication.
