WRITING AND RESEARCH EXPOSITION
Writing occupies a complex position within artistic research.
It can contextualize practice, identify a problem, establish a genealogy, describe a method, analyze material, document transformation, formulate an argument, reflect on positionality, or articulate the significance of an artistic result.
Writing becomes reductive when it treats artistic practice as an illustration of concepts established in advance, translates sensory or embodied knowledge into claims the material cannot support, or substitutes specialized terminology for methodological precision.
The residency supports writing that remains accountable to practice.
This requires attention to the relation between what the artistic work does and what the text claims. The text need not explain the work exhaustively, nor should the work be required to prove every discursive assertion. Their relation may be complementary, dialogical, critical, or intentionally discontinuous.
Participants may develop writing that:
– Clarifies the research question
– Establishes relevant contexts and genealogies
– Describes methods and procedures
– Analyzes artistic materials or situations
– Reflects on the researcher’s position
– Identifies transformations within the project
– Distinguishes intention from outcome
– Examines failure, contradiction, or uncertainty
– Articulates the project’s contribution
– Connects specific findings to wider debates
– Prepares the research for public or editorial consideration
The seminars support movement among different scales and registers of writing, from concise abstracts and project descriptions to extended lectures, critical essays, and publication-oriented contributions.
Research exposition is understood more broadly than writing alone. It concerns the configuration through which a project makes its inquiry available to others.
An exposition may combine text, sound, performance, notation, images, recordings, diagrams, demonstrations, interfaces, or participatory situations. Its task is not merely to display outcomes, but to establish a form in which the project’s question, method, material, and significance can be apprehended.
