RESIDENCY OVERVIEW

 

enuntiatio.praefatio.formulae V. is an international, process-based residency dedicated to artistic research across music, sound, performance, listening, technology, and related forms of critical and creative inquiry.

 

The program brings together an international cohort of artistic researchers and practitioner-researchers whose work investigates how artistic practice can generate, test, embody, and communicate knowledge. It supports both emerging and established projects through sustained presentation, methodological experimentation, contextual research, critical discussion, documentation, writing, and public exposition.

 

The residency unfolds through four online seminars and culminates in an on-site phase at the seventh Bled Contemporary Music Week in Bled, Slovenia (EU). Its extended structure enables participants to revisit their projects across several months rather than presenting them as completed or stabilized outcomes. Research questions, methods, materials, and forms of exposition can be examined, tested, revised, and clarified through repeated engagement with peers and mentors.

 

Projects may emerge through composition, performance, improvisation, sound art, listening practice, installation, instrument or interface design, notation, recording, archival inquiry, technological experimentation, curatorial practice, dramaturgy, pedagogy, writing, or interdisciplinary collaboration. The residency does not prescribe a single definition of artistic research, a preferred aesthetic orientation, or a standardized form of output.

 

Instead, it provides a rigorous framework within which participants can ask:

 

— What does the project investigate?

— Through which artistic practices and materials does that inquiry proceed?

— What kinds of knowledge become available through the work?

— How are those forms of knowledge documented, contextualized, and communicated?

— What assumptions, histories, institutions, and relations condition the inquiry?

— How might critical exchange transform the project’s questions, methods, or public form?

 

The program understands artistic research neither as artistic production supplemented by explanatory commentary nor as conventional scholarship illustrated through creative work. Artistic practice is approached as a mode of inquiry in its own right: a field in which questions can be generated, procedures tested, assumptions exposed, materials transformed, and previously unavailable relations made perceptible.

 

At the same time, the residency does not assume that artistic practice becomes research through declaration alone. It asks participants to establish a precise and consequential relation among a research problem, an artistic procedure, a field of reference, a mode of documentation, and a form of exposition through which others can encounter, examine, interpret, and contest what has emerged.
